Although being overweight can be annoying, it is still desirable to gain some more weight during pregnancy. Usually, 2-4 pounds of weight should be gained at the end of the first trimester. After that, a gain of 1 pound every week is necessary for the rest of the term of pregnancy. In case, twins are expected, the mother should gain 1.5 pounds of weight every week after the initial three months of pregnancy.

It is also essential to include nutrient-rich foods to obtain the required calories, rather than just overeating. Junk foods do provide calories, but these are unable to provide the nutrients that the baby needs to grow. Therefore, including protein rich foods and taking fruits and vegetables are considered better for the pregnancy woman.
