There are certain factors that can increase risks during pregnancy. You must do everything possible to overcome these risks –

  • Avoid drinking alcohol as it can lead to miscarriage or disorders in the baby if s/he survives. It might cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome which can even lead to mental retardation.
  • You should not smoke or sit with people who smoke, during your pregnancy period.
  • Check your intake of coffee. Caffeine in certain cases, leads to diabetes in the unborn child.
  • Medical conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure can also affect the baby if you do not take proper care.
  • Any kind of infection can lead to some serious complications, if not attended to in time.
  • With your doctor’s help, you should guard yourself and your baby against Hepatitis, Herpes and HIV, which can be contracted due to several reasons and can cause grave damage if you are expecting.
  • Drug addiction in pregnant women can be very harmful for their babies. Even consumption of medicines should be avoided.
  • You should stay away from animals as their feces can spread infections that can affect you adversely.
  • X-rays, microwaves, electric blankets, water beds and the like should be avoided.
  • Excessive emotional stress can complicate matters during pregnancy.
  • Do not expose yourself to pesticides.
  • You should not go close to paint fumes and chemicals used for cleaning in homes.
  • You must avoid hot baths for long intervals or saunas.
  • A lot of pregnant women get affected by anemia due to a shortage of iron. So consume lots of greens to avoid this situation.
  • Urine infections are also common at this time. Take extra care of hygiene.
  • There can also be problems like a dislocated placenta or an untimely detachment of the placenta from the uterus.
  • You might suffer from extreme nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. This can have serious effects on your health. It must be attended to in due time.
  • Rh incompatibility can also be risky in certain cases.
  • An excess or a scarcity of amniotic fluid in the amniotic sac can also lead to certain complications.
  • Any exposure to harmful elements present in the atmosphere like lead and mercury can be quite unsafe.

It is of utmost importance that you keep these risk causing factors in mind and discuss every problem with your doctor in order to have a safe pregnancy.
